Here's my take on this young man, Raleigh Jones

1806 Raleigh Jones

Raleigh Jones was born about 1806 in Georgia - I had seen once where place of birth was Oglethorpe Georgia ... it is possible that Joseph Jones [1765NC/1861 Pike AL] and Winneford [d1860 Oglethorpe GA] may be his parents, but without truly knowing the Dad's name/location it would be virtually impossible to pinpoint Raleigh during early census records [ie 1810 and 1820]; however, once he gets old enough BAM there he is...

1830 Census - Butler Alabama ... Rileigh Jones

Rileigh Jones [24 yrs old] has married Mary Ann Brown [before 1830] [20 yrs old] and together they have a son under the age of 5 - I believe this is Burrell and he would be only months old at this point. And they are living in Butler County Alabama. There is a question in my mind about ages for Rileigh and his lovely bride, Mary Ann ... it appears as though they are both under the age of 20 and there is also another male between 15-20 yrs old listed - I believe this could be either a brother of Raleigh's or a brother of Mary Ann's ... hm!

1840 Census - Butler Alabama ... Ralla Jones

Ralla Jones [34 yrs old] has a wive and 7 children by now - 3 girls and 4 boys. They are still living in Butler County Alabama and I can only assume Mary Ann is still his wife. Next the children - beginning with the girls - Rebecca [8 yrs old], Rachael [5 yrs old], and another little girl under the age of 5 - now I believe I have a young boy listed incorrectly for these parents then the girls and boys work out - I think it must be Lancy/Luray/Leroy AND the boys - Burrell [10 yrs old], Gilbert [9 yrs old] and David [4 yrs old moving him to the age 5 column], and then finally, Joseph [1 yr old]. This theory with the children only works if I change Lancy from a boy to a girl...what do you think?

1850 Census - Beat 2 Butler Alabama ... Raleigh Jones

Raleigh Jones [44 yrs old] is now a widower... a farmer with a place worth about $500 and the father of eleven children - all still living and at home in Beat 2 Butler County Alabama. Let's get started - Burrell [20 yrs old] and brother, Gilbert [19 yrs old] are also listed as farmers, but neither of them are assessed a value ... next is Rebecca [18 yrs old] and sister, Rachael [15 yrs old], David [14 yrs old] and then comes my problem one ... this should be a young girl perhaps Lancy [12 yrs old], Joseph [11 yrs old], Sempronia [8 yrs old], Ralleigh [5 yrs old], Milton [4 yrs old], and finally Levi [1 yrs old]. Poor Raleigh...

Note: I believe Raleigh Jones moves all eleven of his children to Covington shortly after the 1850 census and very quickly marries Ann Tines especially since their first child together is born in 1852 ... but more importantly Covington is where Raleigh's oldest child, Burrell Washington Jones meets and marries Barbara Eleanor Hughes on Mar 18, 1854.

1860 Census - Covington Alabama ... Roley L Jones

Raleigh Jones [58 yrs old] lost no time in finding a new wife, Ann Tines [30 yrs old] and continuing on with his family - [I would not have wanted to sit next to this guy for too long]. This family lives in Covington County Alabama --- I really have my doubts about this census as being the correct one for my guy - while there is a Levi at the right age the 2 older girls aren't really working for me unless Lancy is actually Elizabeth [17 yrs old] and Sempronia is actually Sarah Ann [14 yrs old], then Virgil M is Milton [13 yrs old] --- AND now there is a whole new set with the new wife, Ann - Mary [8 yrs old], Orlanda [7 yrs old], Even F [2 yrs old], and curiously there is also a little 3 year old boy by the name of Merion F Douglas - where are his parents? could Rebecca or Rachael have married a Douglas?

Note: Raleigh and Mary Ann's oldest son, Burrell marries B E Hughes also from Covington County ... this could actually be the right census.

1870 Census - Oakey Streak Township 7 Butler Alabama ... Rallie Jones

Rallie Jones [65 yrs old] is farming with his little lady, Ann [40 yrs old] keeping house for him and his family of 9 still living with them. He has moved his flock back to Butler County - this time to Oakey Streak Township 7. Next comes the confusion ... Elizabeth is now 24 yrs old - so is she Lancy or is she Sempronia Elizabeth? Pass --- move on to the next one Mary [18 yrs old], Olanda [17 yrs old], Nancy [9 yrs old], Susan [7 yrs old], twins - Samuel and Fannie [4 yrs old] and last, Naomi [2 yrs old] ... whew! Where are all of Mary Ann Brown's eleven [known] children - other than Elizabeth?

Burrell Washington Jones [1830] married Barbara Eleanor Hughes {my kin} 19 Mar 1854 Gilbert Hutchins Jones [1831] married Martha Ann Martin 1857 Rebecca Jones [1832] Rachael Jones [1835] David Sanford Jones [1836-1897] Lancy - maybe Elizabeth [1838] Joseph Jones [1837] Semphronia - maybe Sarah Ann [1842] Ralleigh Jones Jr [1845-1860] Virgil Milton Jones [1847-1908] Levi Jones [1849]

1880 Census - District 42 Beat 2 South Butler Butler Alabama ... Raliegh Jones

Raliegh Jones [74 yrs old] is still farming and married to Ann [50 yrs old], but it is very curious that a Nancy Norsworthy who is listed as a laborer is also listed as head-of-household for family 26/26 ... puzzling - And it's not an older daughter. Anyways, I believe Ann has had her last child by this census - Augusta [6 yrs old] and her daughter, Nancy [19 yrs old] on the day of the Enumerator's visit was listed as being either sick or temporarily disabled, so as to be unable to attend to ordinary business or duties. I believe the sickness or disability is possibly "fits" [could have been perhaps epilepsy or really any number of neurological disorders]. The other children still at home are Fannie [27 yrs old], Susannah [16 yrs old], Neome [14 yrs old], and Samuel [12]. How sweet their son, George [22 yrs old] has married Sarah [27 yrs old born in Georgia] and they live right next door - George is family 27/27 and Raliegh is family 26/26

1890 Census - Not available

1900 Census - District 11 Precinct 17 Pigeon Creek Butler Alabama ... Ann Jones

Raleigh Jones - Ann is listed as Widowed - so it would be safe to say Raleigh has died ... wonder where he is buried?[1]
