Panic Resident Dead
George Brown Was a Descendant of Old Puritan Family
George Brown, one of the best known residents of Panic, died at his home, last Wednesday morning, Jan. 21, at 6:35 a.m., after an illness of several years due to paralysis.
The deceased was sixty-five years of age and had resided in Panic all his life. He was born and reared on the farm where he died.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 Friday afternoon in the United Brethren church and burial was made in the Brown cemetery at that place. The services were conducted by the Rev. J.S. Hayes, pastor of the U.B. church at Punxsutawney, assisted by Rev. Erb, of Panic. Rev. Hayes was a pastor at Panic before and during the erection of the church at that place and at the close of his sermon spoke of his personal knowledge of the deceased, telling in glowing terms of the part he took in the building of the church and of his kind, generous disposition, and closed his remarks in a very touching manner by relating how Mr. Brown had proved a personal friend to him when he suffered the loss of his horse.
The twenty-six conveyances needed to carry the large crowd that had gathered at the home to the church, where a similar crowd awaited shows the esteem in which he was held.
George Brown was the last surviving son of Thos. J. Brown Sr. who was one of the earliest settlers in this vicinity and whose ancestry traces back to Peter Brown of the Mayflower, as does that of J.O. Brown, deceased, ex-mayor of Pittsburgh, and John Brown, of Harpers Ferry fame.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Rebecca J. Brown, and the following children: Mrs. A.F. Neil, of Canon City, Colo.; T.H. Brown, of Panic; R.B. Brown of Punxsutawney; James G. Brown, Montros, Colo.; Mrs. Clyde Shaffer, of Panic; G.F. Brown, Punxsutawney and Miss Nellie Brown at home.
