Margaret was born in 1781 in Pennsylvania, the daughter of James Brown and Mary Marr. . Her father was blacklisted in Pennsylvania because of his service for the British in the Revolutionary War. They travelled by wagon with their possessions, arriving in the Niagara region of Upper Canada in 1799.
Meanwhile John Udell, son of Mathew Udell, had stayed in Upper Canada when his father had left with the 26th Regiment (Cameronians), to go back to Lower Canada in 1792. Margaret Brown and John Udell met, likely in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and were married around 1800.
James, Jane and John Brown, the youngest children of James Brown and Mary Marr, were baptized, along with James and Catherine Udell, the eldest children of John Udell and Margaret Brown in St Mark's Anglican Church in Niagara-on-the-Lake on 21 May 1804.
Not too long after that Margaret's father, James Brown, moved to Markham Ontario where he had obtained land.
Margaret and John raised a family of 11 children in Pickering, Ontario and Markham. Margaret lived with her son William Udell in 1851 in Upper Canada and was living with her daughter Nancy Udell and her husband Robert Meddaugh in Michigan in 1861. There is a picture of an older woman standing behind Robert Meddaugh and beside Nancy from this period. It could be a picture of Margaret Brown.
