Surname: GATES.

In the 1860 census, my gg-grandfather, John Hile Gates, was living in Buchanan Co., VA in the district of the "Contrary P.O." That place does not appear on my nifty, modern mapping software. Can anyone tell me where it was (is)? Thanks.

Scott Chafin.

Contrary District.

Surname: Brown, Goff, McGlothlin.

In the 1860 Census, the first for the newly created county of Buchanan (1858), the county was divided into four districts. The only area that lists Contrary today is Contrary Creek that runs off next to Rt 460 East of Grundy and Northwest of Richlands. This northeastern quarter of Buchanan county is where the people listed in Contrary Post District where from. Dismal Creek, SengCamp Creek , Brown's Ridge, Whitewood, Pilgrim's Knob, Levisa Fork, and others are the current locations of these people. 1

Dear Rick,. 1

Thanks for answering my query re the location of Contrary in Buchanan Co. The two responses I got have enabled me to locate the general area. I'm hoping to get there this summer to see it for myself.

FYI: I'm a descendant of James Brown and Esther Goff through daughter, Sarah Brown. She married (1) William Oney (1788-1862) on 22 Mar 1812. I descend from TWO of their children (my g-grandparents were first cousins, once removed): James Oney (1818-1869) and Nancy Jelina Oney (1826-1913). The latter's second husband was the John Hile Gates mentioned in my Contrary query.

Thanks again for your reply; I appreciate it very much.

Dear Rick,.

I'm very delinquent in replying to your last message. I appreciated all your info very much. I specially appreciated your comments about SW Virginia. I once drove from Washington as far up the Valley as.

Harrisonburg. Can't wait to see the southwest! Right now, my 6-year-old daughter and I are scheduling departure from Houston at 5:00 am on Sunday, June 4. We'll try to make Birmingham, AL the first day;.

that's 23 of the way, and not as far as from here to El Paso--it's doable. By Thursday, we ought to be in the TazewellBuchanan Co area. We hope to stay some at Breaks Interstate Park, but basically it's just.

get there and then decide. Any other suggestions welcome. I will try to put a gedcom together on my descent from Sarah Brown. It's still a work in progress, but if I wait until I finish, you'll never get anything! I've got a lot on my plate right now, so don't let me forget. I NEVER mind reminders.

Thanks again, Scott Chafin.

PS: Since I wrote you, I've been able to download from the Library of Virginia--what a great resource!--the actual land grants my Gates kin got in Tazewell/Buchanan Co. I can pretty much pinpoint exactly where they were. 1

> Dear Scott,. You Are very welcome to any information that I have concerning this family. I am a descendant through Sarahs' brother Thomas who married Rachel McIntosh. You may have seen my listings on the Buchanan and Tazewell query Pages.. All my info that I put online is free as I have posted them to help people too find leads to their own families. I encourage you to find your sources to be sure. As for the trip.. You may want to make note that James and Esther Goff Brown had land patents in Russell and Tazewell county lines on Maiden Springs next to Moses Higginbotham in the Cove area and up through Cedar Bluff which is right below Brown's ridge in Buchanan County. They had a place called TRENT place on some deeds. Some of the land that was willed to the McGuires was sold back in the.

late forties. And was at the bottom in Cedar bluff across from Indian creek near Clinch river. He also.

mentions William Oney and wills land to him and his daughter Sarah. William I think was even a witness to the will. I'll have to re-read the will to be sure. James Brown seemed to be very prominent in the community in his time. He qualified for many offices, some of which were Road surveyor, Constable, court officers, and Justice of the peace at one time. I am in process of recording all the entries for the.

Brown's in this area at that time frame. note ** the 1995 Paramount picture of LASSIE features beautiful.

Cove, VA in Tazewell VA and the waters of the clinch river, Maiden Springs tributary-y+ies. ** good luck on your trip .. I would hope to run into you ... but if for some reason you can't make it soon ... you will.

want to definetly come over here in the first two weeks of October.. Peak color season ... and you will.

fall in Love with This part of Virginia just as I did nine years ago.. well good Luck and happy hunting.. if.

you have any question don't hesitate to contact me... I would love to trade Information .. and add your.

family to my GEN.. GEDCOM Family Tree Maker...Glad I could help...  :-) Rick.
