Elijah was the son of James and Miriam (Churchman) Brown. He was born in Nottingham, Pennsylvania.
He moved to Philadelphia in 1757. We know this because he requested a certificate to the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting. From the Nottingham minutes: "...A Certificate is also desired for Elijah, son of James Brown to Philadelphia mo. meeting, he being Placed there Apprentice..."[1]
He married Mary Armitt (daughter of Elizabeth (Lisle) and Joseph Armitt) in 1761.[2]
He had 8 children:
In September 1777, Elijah and 19 other Quakers from Philadelphia were arrested and were removed to Winchester, Virginia, on suspicion of them being Loyalists. They were eventually returned to Philadelphia in June 1778.
