Mary Brown was the ninth child of Drew Brown and Margaret Fuller. She was born in 1848 at Hilgay, Norfolk, England.[1] She was baptised at St. Mark, Hilgay on August 6, 1854[2] when she was 6 years old, her sister Ann, three years older was baptised the same day. The father's occupation is given as labourer on one record and carpenter on the other!

In the 1851 census Mary is listed at Hilgay with her parents and four older siblings.[3]
In the 1861 census she is still living at Ten Mile Bank, Hilgay. with her parents, by this time her eldest sister has left home and a younger brother has been born. Mary, now thirteen, is working as an agricultural labourer.[4]
Mary died in Norfolk at the age of 20 in 1868. Her death was registered at Downham.
