Craig, Jane (Brown) The Perth Courier Perth, Ontario CRAIG - At Fergusons Falls on Thursday, April 10th, 1902, Jane Brown, wife of Mr. Robert Craig, aged 81 years.
(source unknown) The familiar form of Mr. Robert Craig, storekeeper of Ferguson's Falls, was seen on the street last Friday. The errand that brought him to town gave to his almost invariably genial countenance the mark of a great and sudden grief. He was arranging for the funeral of his partner, Mrs. Craig, who died on Thursday, April 10th, at the age of 81. For some years a sufferer with rheumatism, the last stages of the deceased's life journey were burdened with the load of this painful disease, requiring all the calm courage and fortitude of the lady's Christian spirit to bear. Other lesser ailments, and weakening in effect, heaped affliction upon affliction, and at last after two weeks of serious illness, on Thursday the supreme moment came when the spiritual and the natural separate and soul took its flight to the God who gave it. In Rutherglen, that suburb of the Scotch metropolis and cosmopolitan city Glasgow, which has given to Canada many of her hardiest pioneers, Mrs. Craig first saw the light in 1821, coming out to Canada with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Brown, when but a little child. The family settled on lot 8, in the 2nd con. of Dalhousie, about halfway between Lanark and Watson's Corners on the farm now occupied by Mr. Godfrey Bell. There were twelve children in the Brown family of which only three now survive: John, in Illinois; Mrs. Wm. Mitchell, Lanark; Mrs. Matt. Bowie, St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1847 the deceased met and married Mr. Robert Craig. The marriage ceremony was performed by Rev. Mr. Fraser. They settled at McEwen's bridge, on the Clyde, two miles from Lanark. McEwen's at that time was beginning an industrial life that developed into considerable importance and has since waned until it remains but a remembrance. Here the couple lived for twenty years, and as days the front and back townships, their life was closely associated with events transpiring in the large lumber business which was then being carried on in Darling and Bagot. Thirty-three years ago Mr. and Mrs. Craig moved to Ferguson's Falls and there they remained ever since, earning the esteem and respect of their neighbors by their genial and kindly dispositions. Of the union four children are living: Mrs. Charles Hollinger, Devil's Lake, N.D.; Charley, in Oklahoma; James, East Grand Forks, and Bethea, at home. The funeral took place on Saturday to Prestonvale Cemetery and was largely attended by sorrowing friends and relatives. The daughter and the father have the especial and sincere sympathy of the community in the great sorrow which has visited them.
