Biography

• Luella, by family account, was a writer and a poetess. She certainly had a spark, and a mischievous twinkle in her eye (which I remember). My Grandmother seemed candid, and straight-talking, and she always made me laugh at her antics.

• Luella was believed to have been born in 1893, but her birth record shows she was born in 1896. There are two censuses (that I can currently find) which show Luella being born in 1893 (and her sister, Lorna, has three different years listed in each of the census records). Where the discrepancy comes from is unclear (Luella's Father, at the time of census, or the Birth Registrar- which is unlikely, but possible?).

There are some problems with discrepancies in age. Luella thought she was born in 1893, but her schedule of birth shows 1896 (shows birthdate as April 19, 1896. And registration date: July 30th, 1896).

However, Luella married Ewen in 1911. This means that Luella was 15 years of age (not 18) when she married. This was illegal (at the time)- if they knew her age (explained above that they may not have known Luella's real age). It was (according to law) that: "Everyone who celebrates, aids or participates in a marriage rite or ceremony knowing that one of the persons being married is under the age of 16 years is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years.[3] Section 2.2 of the Civil Marriage Act also states: No person who is under the age of 16 years may contract marriage.".

This does mean that her head stone (and other possible documents) are/may be incorrect (if those documents have her birth year as 1893.

These do not list Luella, but they do list her family- and it shows different birth years for Luella's sister (Lorna). Which could show that her father didn't know when the girls were born- which would be why Luella always thought she was born 3 years earlier than she was.
