Biography

Frank Brown was born 31 Jul 1874, in Washington, DC. He was the son of James L. and Charlotte A. Brown. In 1880, he was six years old and living with his his parents, four older brothers (ages 11 - 21), and a newborn baby brother. His father was the owner of a retail provisions store in D.C.

On 24 Oct 1898, Frank married Catherine Estelle Hayes. In 1900, the couple was living in Washington, DC with Estelle's mother and several of her adult siblings at 629 T Street. That year, Frank was working as a bartender.

In 1910, the couple was residing in a rented home at 1436 W Street, in Washington DC, along with their seven year-old daughter, Helen, and Estelle's mother, Ann. Frank was again working as a bartender in a saloon that year.

In 1917 or 1918, Frank registered for the WWI draft. He listed his home address as 613 Gershom Place, which was actually the home of his wife's brother-in-law and sister, Frank and Mary Fugett. That year, Frank was working as a salesman in a cigar store located at 709 7 14th Street in DC. Frank listed his wife, Catherine, as his next of kin, but provides an address for her in New York City. Apparently, Catherine had gone to New York to assist her daughter, Helen, with her bludgeoning acting career. In 1920 he continued to be enumerated in the Fuget household, but that year was identified as a meat seller.

In 1930, Frank was residing alone in a rented DC home. That year he was working a a meat seller. He was described as a 56-year-old widower.

He spent his final years at his estate, Holly Shores, on Chesapeake Bay. He died 2 Mar 1940, at Person, Maryland, following an illness of several months. He was 65 years old. He is buried in Saint Nicholas Cemetery, Patuxent River, St. Mary's County, Maryland.
