Her parents, Hance and Abby Brown were married in Warren County, Indiana October 9, 1834. [4] [There is speculation the location of their marriage may have been erroneously transcribed. Abigail's family lived in Morgan County, Indiana. Warren County is farther west.--Allen Brown]
Hance and Abby's first child, Rufus was born in 1836. The birth of two daughters followed, Eliza (1840), and Melissa (1843). James Martin Brown was born in 1846. He was their fourth child. As a boy, he was called Martin. John was two years younger than Martin, four when the June 1850 census was completed, and another brother, Wilson was one. [2][3]
Twin sons were delivered March 21, 1851. Sadly, they didn't survive and their mother's life was also forfeit. Abby died March 21, 1851. [5] She was buried March 24, 1851 in Friends Cemetery, now White Lick Cemetery, Mooresville, Indiana. There are two graves for infant sons near hers. Another grave is marked "Son of H & A Brown", it is for Wilson, dated July 20,1851. [6]
There is a record for a John K. Almon marrying Anna Melissa Brown on September 24, 1859 in Hendricks County, Indiana. It is not certain if this marriage is for John and Melissa. However, it was officiated by John Hadley, who also officiated at the 1851 marriage of Hance Brown and Melinda Love. He was Hance Brown's neighbor. [8]
Melissa may have appeared in the 1860 census with her father's family. [3] In the Guilford, Hendricks County, Indiana census. There is an eighteen year old female with the name "Matilda". [9]
Another possibility is the 1860 census with her husband, John. In the Brown, Hendricks County, Indiana census record she is identified as "Anny M." [10]
By 1870, Melissa and John K. Almond have moved to Tonganoxie, Leavenworth County, Kansas. They have two daughters: Josey (born about 1867 in Indiana) and Eliza (born about 1869 in Kansas). Her father, Hance Brown, his brother, Frederick Brown, and her sister, Eliza Hadley and their families had all moved to Tonganoxie. [11]
In 1880 Melissa and John Almond are still in Tonganoxie. Two more daughters have joined their family: Ivy and Mary. Ivy was born in Kansas (about 1871), and Mary was born in Missouri (about 1877). [12]
In 1885, they are found in Palmyra, Kansas, along with Rufus Brown, Melissa's brother. Melissa's sister, Eliza Hadley and her family also live in Palmyra, Kansas at this time.[13]
Anna Melissa Brown Almond died January 21, 1910. [14] She was buried in the Bonner Springs Cemetery, Section D, Lot 33, Grave 3.
