Subject: War of 1812 Pension Papers, James Brown Jr., m. Mary Amelia Vance.

Date: Sat, 21 Apr 2007 07:07:10 -0700.

Hi, 1

Are you the same Rick Brown who posted so much helpful information about the family of James Brown and Esther Goff and family, beginning several years ago?. 1

I'm a member of the MyFamily web site of the Hager Family, and a few weeks ago a generous lady there (Barbara Cherap, who is researching the Vance family) ordered the War of 1812 pension papers of James Brown Jr. from the NARA, then transcribed and shared them. I don't think any fellow researchers that I know of were even aware that these pension papers existed until now. They don't say anything about James Brown Jr.'s parents, but they tell the exact death dates of James and his wife, and they give solid documentation that his wife was the daughter of Abner Vance (papers say they were married at the home of her father Abner Vance in Russell County). There are other things in the papers that may give valuable clues to follow up on. 1

As I was thinking about these things this morning, I thought of you because a few years ago when I was researching the early Brown family in Russell/Tazewell County, your posts were very helpful to me. I'm trying to find your email address, and ask you if you've seen these papers or if you'd like a copy of them. 1

Thanks!

Huff Mountain Wyoming ~ Logan County Lines Rt. 10 from Oceana ~ Lynco, Wyoming Co. West Virginia runs with Huff Creek to Huff Junction at Guyandotte River Mallory, Logan Co. West Virginia.

Interesting is the town of Claypool along Rt 10 on Huff Creek near Mallory, Mineral City, in Logan County.

Claypool was the family name of In-Laws to James Jr. This area was the area of the Hatfields. 1

Hatfields

Eli and Ephraim (Big Eaf) Hatfield, settled in Mate Creek; Thomas and Jacob settled on Gilbert Creek; Joseph settled on Ben Creek; James G. "Old Slater" and his brother John plus Phoebe settled in what is now Wyoming County; Jenny lived near the Wyoming/Mingo County line at Justice, West Virginia, opposite the mouth of Little Huff Creek. Valentine eventually in 1855 took up about seventy-five acres of land in the "Roughs" of the Guyandotte River, near Justice, where he died on June 16, 1867. 1

Their children were:

1. James Harold Brown married Nancy Toler daughter of David Toler.

2. Petterson "Patten" Brown married Rebecca Roach, daughter of Reuben Roach.

3. Elisha Brown married Cosbi Bailey, daughter of Thomas Bailey:

Children were Aurelia, Elsworth, Andy C., Noah, Elisha Jr., Mathers, Dennie, and Joda.

4. John "Old Jack" Brown married Nancy Toler daughter of Richard Toler.

5. Esseau Brown married Margaret Vance; children were Minta, Perry, Mary,.

Michael, Grace, and Anthony.

6. Isaac Brown married Isabel "Ibbie" Brown.

"I am sure that Mrs Bowman was incorrect in here statement for #1 James Harold Brown and #4 John "Old Jack" Brown." Jim Burgess.

James Brown married Millie Vance, daughter of Abner Vance Senior; and settled on Big Huff near division line between Wyoming and Logan, probably before 1820.

Abner Vance, Sr., was a pioneer of Logan County territory. Along with James Brown and Abner Vance, Sr.; we should mention William Dingess, Thomas Caine, Peter Huff, Thomas and Joseph Gilbert as scouts whose field of operation invluded this territory. Of them, Caine, Huff and Filberts lost their lives in active service in this area. Their names perpetuated in streams named Gilbert Creek, Huff Creek, and Caine Creek. 1

LOGAN COUNTY PETITION, DECEMBER 9TH, 1824.

The memorial of part of the inhabitants of Logan County to the Honorable Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Virginia respectfully showeth; That your honorable bodies at their last session, after forming the said county of Logan, appointed certain Commissioners to locate the site for the Public Buildings of said new County. Four of whom met at the house of William Hinchman in the month of March but could not agree in opinion as to the most eligeable situation for said purpose. The Commissioners again met, five of them, in June and again separated without being able to come to any conclusion; two of them being for the Islands of Guyandotte only 26 mles from the western boundary of the county and two of them were in favor of John Cook's place, situated about 49 miles from the western and 54 miles from the eastern line of the county. The other Commissioner expressed himself in favor of the mouth of Huffs Creek; which is situated, nearly halfway between the above mentioned places. The Commissioners again, met, in August, after being duely notified as the affadavits o----d will show; and unanimously (a majority that attended,) or the Report that accompanies this will shew; decided, that a place therein mentioned near the mouth of said Huffs Creek was in their opinion the most eligable for the purpose of aforesaid;. 1

James Brown signed the Petition to form county with others, the only Brown in the signature of names. 1

1850 Logan County, Virginia Census.

Enumerated by James G. Perry, Jul-Oct 1850 http:/www.main.com/~djwebblogan.html. 1

On July 18, 1850 James G. Perry began his enumeration of the citizens of Logan County, Virginia for the 7th decennial census by the federal government. As he started out, he encountered a cultural technology and population structure far different from what a traveler would now find. Roads were virtually non-existent, consisting mostly of rough paths trailing beside the watercourses. Rivers and creeks drained generally northward to the Ohio River and followed two main drainage systems: the Guyandotte River in the east and center, and the Tug Fork of The Big Sandy River on the west. Along each of these rivers a simple road ran roughly north and south alongside the river; a single intersecting route ran up from the mouth of Pigeon Creek on the Tug Fork east to the county seat on the Guyandotte River, then northeast to Boone County. Goods were carried in wagons on the three roads, by horseback along the trails, or in push canoes carrying cargoes of furs and ginseng up and down the rivers. The County of Logan was larger in 1850, comprising what would later include Mingo County on the west and the "foot" of Lincoln County to the north. Even so, the area spanned only about 45 miles from north to south and an equal distance east to west.

Perry probably set out on horseback from the courthouse at Lawnsville (present-day Logan), so named for its principal family, the Lawsons (Spence, p. 89: LAWsoNS-VILLE). From there he proceeded to inventory the households of the region, enumerating six or seven families per day. He worked steadily at his task, breaking only every few days. After having worked a total of fifty five days, he was essentially finished by September 18, 1850. He paused for ten days before tallying families 567 - 572 on September 29, 1850; he dated page 2 of the slave census on 25 October 1850 to conclude the enumeration.

The job guidelines were simple. Every person was counted at their usual place of abode on 1 June 1850, including those temporarily absent. If a person was deceased on the day the census was taken, but alive on 1 June 1850, he or she was enumerated; if a person was born after 1 June 1850, he or she was not enumerated even though present on the day the enumerator visited. All information was accepted without proof as given, and if the family was temporarily absent or otherwise unavailable, the informant could be a neighbor or other person who had knowledge of the family. 1
