Biography

There are conflicting accounts of when and where Amy was born. There are no New Zealand or Victorian birth certificates that appear to match, except for this one from 1873:

Victorian Births, Deaths & Marriages Registration No: #25221/1873 Year: 1873 Surname: TINDALL Given names: Amy Francis Brown Mother's family name at birth: TINDALL Mother's given names: Mary Ann Father's name: "U" Place of birth: MELB N

UNFOUNDED SPECULATION: It seems quite possible that Amy was born out of wedlock, and then Mary Ann and Kenneth subsequently married in late 1873, which could have contributed to the unhappiness of the marriage. See Mary Ann's profile for more information.

"Less is known about Amy who appears to have lived between Perth and Sydney and may have worked as a musician." (2)

1876 Amy's mother was shot dead by her father, for which he was subsequently hanged. (Who cared for Amy after this?)

1887 (Geraldton social event) "This was followed by selections from "Norma, a pianoforte solo really excellently played by Miss Amy Brown, a young lady who on this occasion appeared for the first time in public, and-who displays considerable promise." (8)

Sunday Times (Perth, WA) Sun 21 Sep 1913:
1913 "The friends of Miss Amy Brown, a sister of Mrs. Willie Burgess, of Perth, West Australia, but who is at present in Sydney, following up the musical profession, will be interested to learn (says a Sydney exchange) that she has become engaged to Mr. Arthur Evans (of Melbourne), a brother of Mrs. Greenham, of Western Australia. Miss Brown is a clever musician, and dur- ing her residence here has gathered up quite a large circle of musical friends." (7)

In an obituary to her sister Edith Cowan in 1932, Amy is mentioned as still alive and unmarried and living in Sydney. "Mrs. W. Burges and Miss A. Brown, of Sydney, are sisters." (4)

A member of the Western Australian Association in Sydney. "The association is purely Western Australian residents, now, as they say, "exiled in Sydney""(6):
1931 "Miss Amy Brown (Geraldton) is the able directress of the musical programmes." (6)
1933 " A very bright musical programme was arranged by Miss Amy Brown and was contributed entirely by members of the association." (5)
1936 "Miss Amy Brown (musical director for the W.A.A.)." (9)
Dec 1937 (W.A.A.) "A musical programme was arranged by Mrs. Stephen Herford and Miss Amy Brown." (10)

(No obvious info on Amy after 1937 could be found by this editor - can anyone help?)
