Biography

John was born on January 7, 1884 in Chamois (near Lynn), Osage County, Missouri to Marcus and Adelia Jane (Geiser) Brown.[5,6,7] He had two younger brothers: Langley G. and Leyden V. Brown. His father, Marcus, disappeared in June 1892, never to be seen again. His mother, Adelia, sued for divorce in 1897 in Lynn, Missouri and was awarded custody of the children.[2,8] Adelia married Henry Marquand on June 15, 1898 [9] and John lived with them in Benton Missouri. [1]

He worked for the Missouri Pacific Railway all of his life and lived in places that the railroad ran. On November 20, 1910, John married Maude Elma Smith in Edwardsville, Illinois. They gave birth to Lois Virginia Brown on July 31, 1912 in Chester, Illinois and Arthur Smith Brown on February 20, 1917 in Illmo, (Scott City) Missouri. Maude died on November 12, 1931 and Maude told John on her death bead to take care of her younger sister, Helen[5]. John did that, marrying Helen on December 10, 1932. They gave birth to Nancy Eileen Brown on October 9 1933 but the child died shortly afterward. John passed away on October 20, 1950 of a heart attack. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Alton, Illinois[6]
