Obituary -

Helen was a wonderful Christian lady who loved her church, her community, and her family. She lived on Bald Creek in the Upper Crabtree Community.

Helen Smith,at the age of 78, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Buncombe County, she was the daughter of the late Roy L. and Zella Miller Brown, and was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, J.D. Smith, who died in 2002; grandson, Jeremy Messer; three brothers, Frank and his wife, Jorretta, Paul and David Hannah; sister, Mary Henderson; sister-in-law, Elva Hannah.

She was a member of James Chapel Baptist Church.

She was survived by three daughters, Glenda Henderson and her husband, Terry, of Granite Falls, Lynn Messer and her husband, Robert, of Clyde, and Shelia Griffin and her husband, Jim, of Winston-Salem; son, Donald Smith and his wife, Linda, of Clyde; three sisters, Wilda Smith and her husband, Earl, of Clyde, Wanda Garrison and the late Charles Garrison of Florida, and Willie Lamb and her husband, George, of Swannanoa; three brothers, Lee Roy "Pet" Hannah of Waynesville, Tommy Hannah and his wife, Helen, of Michigan, and Dean Hannah and his wife, Carroll, of Canton; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service washeld at 2 p.m. Saturday at James Chapel Baptist Church, with former Pastor Alan Davis officiating and Pastor Billy Ferguson assisting.

Burial followed at Upper Crabtree Community Cemetery.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
