Biography

Ester was born in 1790 in a successful farming community in the middle of 10 children. She married Isaac Rushton, who lived on the other side of the county. They were probably married in 1809, as their first child was born in November 1810.

Ester and Isaac had 8 sons and 3 daughters, Thomas R., Hannah, Christanna, James Harrison, Sarah, Elijah, Simon Collis, Jasper, Stephen R., Samuel Peter, and Isaac, on their farm in Westchester, Cumberland County. All of them lived to adulthood. Their sons Thomas, Elijah, Jasper, and Samuel and all of their daughters married local spouses and remained in the area.

By 1841, their son James had moved to Maine and married a local woman there.

In 1849, their son Stephen R. moved to the States and appears to be the first Rushton to move to Tama County, Iowa. He was married and living there by 1860.

In 1851, when they were 25 and 19, Simon and Isaac went to Boston to work, intending to return to Nova Scotia. They did return and married in Cumberland County. However, Isaac died when he was 25.

In 1860, Ester's husband Isaac died. She was 70. Their son Elijah died also.

In 1861, sons Thomas, Elijah, Simon, and Samuel all lived near each other in River Philip District, Cumberland County.

About 1873, Simon, his wife, children, and grandchildren, moved to Tama County, Iowa, to join James and Stephen. Sometime in her old age, Ester chose to make the journey to Tama County also.

At the age of 92, she died among her family in Calhoun County, Iowa, and is buried in Reading Cemetery there. Esther is the most popular name among her descendants.
