The 1870 U.S. Federal Census records Joseph Winston, a farmer age 63 born in North Carolina, as head of family #18 living in Gainsboro, Independence Co., Arkansas, with Post Office at Batesville. In his household are Mary A. age 42 born in TN, Fannie age 6 born in AR, Mattie age 3 born in AR, and William D. age 3 months born in AR.^[2]
