Research Notes

Profile manager researching death date. No records have been found after 1860 land and Census records.

The one and only source on Brown-55975 profile prior to merge with Brown-69434 is to a geni.com profile that does not offer any sources to substantiate the information:

The number of females in JOSEPH BROWN's household in 1816 suggests that AILY BROWN was within "courting distance" of HILLERY BRELAND, and indicates JOSEPH was her father. Given that JOSEPH's father, WILLIAM G. BROWN, was probably in the household, AILY could possibly be his sister.

JOSEPH's father's passport was issued about the same time as HILLERY BRELAND's father's, ABRAHAM BRELAND, was issued. The families could have migrated to Mississippi Territory together.

Analysis

AILY was born about 1800 in South Carolina based on Census records. She married HILLERY BRELAND in 1818 in Marion County Mississippi, and was enumerated in his household until 1840. On the 1840 Census, AILY was enumerated as head of household with six children.[1] The oldest child was to age 19 which would be son, LEROY. There were seven slaves listed in 1840, but none on the 1850 Slave Schedule. Perhaps the slaves were on loan or hired out from neighbors and relatives, the THORNHILLs and RUSHINGs.

It appears she was a true pioneer woman who managed well after HILLARY was gone. In addition to the forty acres AILY was taxed on in 1843 which HILLARY had purchased in 1836,[2]

land records show AILY purchased 40 acres of land in 1853, 40 acres in 1854, and 240 acres in 1860.[3] Perhaps these purchases were based on lands being sold for twelve and one-half cents per acre. According to author, Luke Connelly Ward, “In the early fifties a great excitement was started in Pike County by John King. An order had been issued by the Interior Department under statutory provisions authorizing the entry of lands at twelve and one-half cents.” [4]

The 1850 Census enumerated Aly Breland age 49, as head of household, daughter, Sarah age 24, son, ELISHA age 16, daughter, JANE age 13, son, Hillary age 10.[5]

In 1860, two children remained in 60 year old ALLY's household, HILLERY age 21, and JANE age 24.[6] Son, ELISHA, was enumerated in the household after ALLY's.

After the 1860 Census, this profile manager has not found any other records. Daughter, JANE JENNY, was enumerated in the household of JERRY BULLOCH and SARAH ANN, his wife as a house keeper in 1870. Some descendants show AILY died in 1898 without any documentation. It is unlikely she lived to age 98.
