Willie Albert Brown, called "Bill" by his wife, was born in Britton's Neck, SC. On February 19, 1918, he enlisted in the Army, leaving his farming occupation behind. Bill served in the Medical Department for a little over a year until he was discharged on May 14, 1919.

Bill met his wife Winnie Hartley in Britton's Neck, as she taught school there; they married in May 1923, when he was 28 and she was 24. On the 1930 Census, he is seen to have lived with Winnie, their children Helen and Frank, his sister Amelia, and their father Albert on a farm in a rented house; he is listed as an Employer on the census, meaning that he employed others to help out on the farm. Bill and Winnie were married for eight years before her untimely death from complications with diabetes and pneumonia.

After Winnie passed away in 1931, her family wanted to raise their children Helen and Frank in Lexington, SC, but he wouldn't allow it because he wanted to raise them. He soon took them back to Marion County, in the Britton's Neck area. He died of pneumonia, seven years later, in 1938 at the Veterans Hospital in Columbia, SC after being hospitalized a month earlier for another illness.
