Biography
Roy Brown is a part of US Black heritage.
Roy L. Brown was born about March 1880 in Frederick County, Maryland, the son of Fannie Frances (Brown) Hawkins (1862 - 1894). At the time of the 1880 Census, he was 3 months old and living with his mother and maternal grandparents in the village of Middletown.[1]
Roy died on 28 Aug 1898 of a stab wound inflicted by Charles Miller after a "camp meeting" in Braddock, Frederick, Maryland. The trial was reported in great detail in the local newspaper, and young Miller was convicted of second degree murder after a 9-minute deliberation by the jury.[2] On 19 October 1898, Mr Miller was sentenced to seventeen years and six months in the (presumed state) Penitentiary—"only six months short of the most extreme penalty for second degree murder."[3]
Roy is buried in Asbury African Methodist Episcopal Cemetery, Frederick, Maryland.[4]
Research Notes
—Notes on Charles Miller. Although no race was referenced for Charles in the newspaper accounts, Roy was always identified as "colored," leading one to infer that Charles was white. The 1900 Census shows a Charles Miller, Teamster, b Jan 1877 in Maryland, as a prisoner in the Maryland Penitentiary in Baltimore. He was identified as "white".[5]
