Margaret Brown was born in Birsay in 1842. she was the daughter of Peter Brown and Ann Spence. Margaret was the 7th of 12 Brown children: Mary Ann, Jacob, George, Thomas, Jemima, Isobel, Catherine, Peter who died in infancy, Peter (2), Henry and James. Margaret grew up on the family farm at Breckly South.
On 4 July 1862, Margaret married Thomas Clouston and took over the running of the Netherbigging household, and producing 3 sons: William, Peter and John, and 4 daughters: Jessie, Margaret, Martha and John. [1]
In 1878, Margaret's husband Thomas passed away leaving Margaret to manage Netherbigging Farm.
On 21 Nov 1895, she married Thomas Irvine, a widower, at Netherbigging, Stenness. At the time of their marriage Margaret was recorded as a farmer. Thomas Irvine died ten years later, in 1905.
Margaret passed away in Stenness on 1st November, 1919. She is buried in the Stenness graveyard with her first husband Thomas Clouston.
