Biography

Scottish flag
Alexander Brown was born in Scotland.

Alexander Watt Brown was born 21 May 1879 at North Cotton Kintore, the son of James Brown and Jane Donald. In the 1881 census, Alexander was with his parents and siblings James and William J at Cottown, Kintore. In the 1891 census, 11 year old Alexander was with his parents and siblings, James 17, William 15, John D. 8, Charles 6, Isabella S 3, Alfred N 4, and three servants (Agnes Petrie, Geo Robertson and Baxter Pirie) at North Cotton in Kintore.

In the 1901 census, Cotton Farm, Kintore, Alexander, age 21, a Saw Miller Wood Worker, is with his parents and siblings John 18, Charles 16, Alfred 14, Isabella 13 and his aunt Mary Brown. Alexander, a 24 year old Wood Merchant, married Mary Ann Crombie Bonner Johnstone, a 23 year old Clerkess, on 09 Jul 1903 at the Bonaccord Hotel on Market St in Aberdeen. Witnesses were John D Brown and Ella Johnstone.

Apparently Alexander and his brother William John Brown operated a business called Brown Brothers, at 21 Auchmill Rd in Bucksburn. They were Timber Merchants. I suspect it may have started in 1923. The business partnership was dissolved on 31 Dec 1935 and Alexander continued on operating the business under the same name. Advocate: R. B. Wiliamson, 6 Union Row, Aberdeen. As a side note, Alexander's brother William was married to Mary Ann's sister Eliza.

Alexander, a Timber Merchant, age 71, died on 27 Feb 1951 at the Royal Infirmary in Aberdeen. His usual residence was 28 Ellerslie Rd in Bankhead, Bucksburn, Aberdeen. He had Essential Hypertension, Arteriosclerosis in his leg, with Cerebral Thrombosis. R. W. Williamson, a Law Agent at 6 Union Row in Aberdeen was the death informant. Apparently the same gentleman who was the Advocate for both Alexander and William when their business partnership was dissolved.

Purely speculation but I wonder if the partnership was dissolved because brother William decided to pursue another career. When brother William died in 1938 he was a Quarry Owner.
