Obituary: TUESDAY, APRIL 16, 1912. The Narracoorte Herald (SA : 1875 - 1954), 16 April, p. 2
Death of Mrs. J. B. Bennett.— Another old South-Eastern resident has joined the great majority in the person of Mrs. Maria Bennett, wife of Mr. J. B. Bennett, of Belle View, Moy Hall, near Narracoorte. The deceased lady had been in a poor state of health for some years, and during the past six years she had been bedridden with rheumatics, and had lost the use of her hands and feet. She passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 75. Mrs. Bennett, whose maiden name was Brown, was born in Yorkshire, England, in the year 1837, and came with her parents to Australia in the year 1853, landing at Port Adelaide. The vessel took four months coming from the old country, and the voyage was remarkable for having 100 births and deaths among the passengers. The deceased lady went to reside with her parents in the Kapunda district, where they took up land, and in the year 1855 she was married to Mr. J. B. Bennett at the age of 18, her husband then being 21 years of age, so that they started life together in the bloom of youth. Mrs. Bennett came to the South-East with her husband in the year 1861, and settled at Mount Gambier, where they lived for ten years. Then Mr. Bennett took up land in the Millicent district, and followed agricultural pursuits for about 20 years. Some twenty years ago Mr. Bennett settled on country near Moy Hall, where he still follows grazing and farming. There was a family of 14 children, six of whom are dead. Her husband (Mr. J. B. Bennett), six sons, and two daughters survive, and there are 44 grand children. Mesdames Harding, of Unley (Adelaide), Bowen, of Broken Hill (N.S.W.), and Smith, of the Burra, are sisters of the deceased lady. The funeral will take place this afternoon, when the remains of the deceased will be laid to rest in the Narracoorte cemetery.
