Biography

Isaac Newton Brown was born 1775. I cannot confirm with solid documentation that Isaac Newton Brown is the son of William Brown and Abigail Clapp Brown. See Note 1.

Isaac married Content Hamilton on 8 Jan 1809 in DeRuyter, New York. [1]

Isaac and his family were found in the 1820 United States Federal Census in Truxton, Cortland, New York with one male under 10 (Isaac Jr.), 1 male 26 thru 44 ( Isaac Sr.), three females under 10 (Flora, Adelia, Rhoda), 1 female 10 to 15 (Morencia) and 1 female 26 to 44 (this should be Content). [2]

Isaac died 21 Jan 1825 in Truxton, Cortland, New York [3] [4]

Notes

Note 1: Having gotten bit by not having the proper source/documentation, I try to find as much source documentation as I possibly can. My problem with Isaac Newton Brown s how do I know for sure who Isaac's parents really are? Could he have traveled by himself to a different part of the country? And when did he do that? Did he follow other family members out to New York? And how about the birth year? I know headstones can be wrong. I recently sent a message to a moderator of the Cortland Genealogy website: "I am desperate to find a clear proven case that Isaac Newton Brown b 1775 and d 1825 in Truxton, Cortland, NY is indeed the son of William Brown and Abigail Clapp of Rhode Island. Birth date for the son of William and Abigail is listed as 6 Sep 1776. Every family tree I've seen on Ancestry says William and Abigail are his parents but have no clear proof other than the Rhode Island birth records. But how many Isaac Newton Browns are there? Can we really rely on that being the right Isaac? The headstone on Isaac Newton Brown (h/o Content Hamilton) reads 1775. History of Cortland County says there was a Benjamin Brown who settled in the area. Could he be the father? There are two Isaac Browns listed in the 1810 US Census in Onondaga, New York (which I understand borders Truxton during that time frame). The first Isaac lists 1 male under 10, 1 male 26 to 44 (which would fit Isaac b 1775 or 1776), 1 female under 10, and 1 female 16 to 25 (which would fit Content b 1789). The other Isaac is much older with 1 male under 10, 1 male 45 and over, 1 female 10 to 15, 1 female 16 thru 25 and 1 female 45 and over. There are no other Isaac Browns listed for New York. My Isaac married Content Hamilton in 1809 in DeRuyter. Can't see him moving back out of the state! "

The other problem I have concerns the children. There is supposed to be some kind of will or probate document that lists the children of Isaac and Content Hamilton Brown. Family Trees on Ancestry list a few variations along with varying birth dates, some of which just can't be! Children:

Moenica 18 Jan 1810 died 18 Jan 1875 (I suppose there has been incidents of people dying on their birthdays) never married (same in all trees) Rebecca 12 Mar 1811, never married, (I don't have her in my tree) Flora, 29 Oct 1811 married Wiseman Cotton - (If I understand this correctly, that means Content would have had Rebecca and immediately got pregnant and had Flora 7 months later.  ?????) Isaac N. Jr 21 Sep 1812 married Lucetta Browning (same in all trees) Adelia 18 Jan 1815, never married (same in all trees) Rhoda H. 21 Jun 1818 married William Cotton (I wonder if Wiseman and Wiliam are brothers?) (same in all trees) Washington 5 Aug 1824, married Helen Pond (same in all trees though some have 1820 for a birth date.)

Update: found Isaac's will and probate record - probated May 1825 in the county of Cortland, New York verifies Content was his wife, his children and their birth dates and names were Morancia (Moenica - handwriting is tough to decipher) Brown, 15 years old on 18 Jan; Flora Brown, 14 years old on 10 Mar; Isaac N. Brown, 12 years old on 21 Sept; Adelia G. Brown, 9 years old on 18 Jan; Rhoda H. Brown, 6 years old on 21 June; and Washington LaFayette Brown, 9 months old on 5 May. [5]

Note 2: 1820 Census - Note: If the children are correct, then the members of the 1820 Isaac Brown household are: Isaac Jr. - 8, Moenica - 10, Flora - 9, Adellia - 5, Rhoda - 2, Isaac - head of household and Content his wife.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Isaac by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Isaac:
