Family Life

She would marry William Leonard Dabbs and they would have:

Through the years

In 1900[2] she was living with her family on a farm they owned, with a mortgage, in Athol, Spink County, South Dakota. Her mother confirmed she had had 9 children and all 9 were still living. In the home were Elias 68, Emma 43, Charles 19, Arthur 17, Earl 15, Roy 13, Kate 11, Harry 9, Freddy 7, Ollie 5, Florence 3

The conditions of the family we be noted in a few papers including on April 4, a few days after Emma's death[8]

LIVED IN DUGOUT. A Family in Spink County Living in the Worst Kind of Poverty Found.

The following special from Iledlield gives some details of an extreme case of poverty in Spink county: One of the worst scenes that one ever looked upon was witnessed when neighbors wear to the home of Elias Brown who lives about four miles west of Athoi in this county. Brown's family consists of himself and wife and nine children ranging in age from 3 years to 19 years and they have lived in a dugout about fifteen feet square on his farm for ten years. They came to this county about 1880 and settled on the present farm and have lived a secluded life ever since. It was surmised by neighbors that Brown was not all that he ought to be to his family and for some time friends have sent in clothing and tried to give what aid they could to the struggling wife and children. These overtures have not always met the approval by the presiding genius of the fold. Last week it was discovered that some of the family were sick and upon investigating it was found that ten of the eleven at home were down with typhoid pneumonia. The father refused to allow a physician to be called and all were lying on masses of old rags without, underclothing of any kind, and all packed in the little dugout in the hill. It was found when a physician was called that there was no help for the mother, and she died on Sunday morning. For the others, there is some hope. On Saturday the neighbors clubbed together and bought lumber for a house and on Sunday build a comfortable house for the children and the ladies sent a wagon load of clothing and beds, for there were no beds in the house except a trundle bed. Brown himself opposed the idea of a doctor and would, when opportunity arose, throw all the medicine out of doors

Death

She died on the 25 FEB 1968 and she would be buried in the Valleyview Cemetery Camrose, Lloydminster Census Division, Alberta[7]
