Biography

Thomas Brown, born at Concord, Massachusetts August 28, 1686, was the son of Thomas Brown and Ruth Vinton Jones. [1] [2]

He married Hannah Potter on November 22, 1709 at Concord. Hannah was born there on December 20, 1690, daughter of Judah and Grace (Brooks) Potter. [1] [2] [3]

He died at Concord March 13, 1717/8 [1], leaving a widow and four young children. [2]

Thomas is buried in the South Burying Place at, Concord where his inscription reads: Here Lyes the Body of Mr. THOMAS BROWN Junr. Who Deceased March ye 13th 1718/9 in ye 32nd Year of his Age[4]

Thomas died intestate. His inventory, assessed at L301 17s included the dwelling house and 37 acres with buildings was valued at L170 and 22 acres on the pond plain valued at L30, and livestock at L56. His widow Hannah Brown was appointed administrator of the estate and received her 1/3 dower, and the remainder of the estate was divided among minor the children: Ephraim, Timothy, Luke and Hannah. [5]

His widow Hannah, married second, Simon Davis III on June 1, 1719. In April, 1732. Simon and Hannah Davis, son Ephraim Brown and John Hunt agreed to the reappraisal of Thomas' estate for distribution among the children. [5]

In May, 1732 Thomas' estate was divided among the children with eldest son Ephraim receiving a double portion. [5]

On March 3, 1732/3, son Ephraim was to pay the following to his siblings.

  • Timothy L34 14s 2d
  • Luke L49 14s 2d
  • Hannah L 64 14s 2d [5]

Hannah (now) Davis and John Hunt, guardian for Timothy and Luke, acknowledged to the court their approval of the settlement and of Ephraim being responsible for the distributions. Ephraim was guardian to sister Hannah. [5]

In April, 1734/5, Timothy Brown acknowledged to the court that he had received his legacy from his brother Ephraim. [5]

On May 14, 1735, Elnathan Jones acknowledged receipt of L 64 14s 2d, plus interest, as his wife Hannah's portion of her father Thomas' estate from Ephraim. [5]

On March 9. 1735/6, Luke acknowledge receipt of L49 14s 2d, from his brother Ephraim. [5]

Hannah died on December 1, 1782 at Concord. On March 13, 1783, the court ordered an appraisal of her 1/3 dower left by her first husband Thomas Brown's estate to be distributed among the heirs. Her estate was assessed at L122 1s. [5]

Son Ephraim was assigned to pay L23 17s 7 1/2d to the heirs, being:

  • the heirs of Timothy Brown, deceased
  • the heirs of Luke Brown, deceased
  • the heirs of Hannah Cordis, deceased [5]

  1. Ephraim (Dea) born on November 7, 1710; died at Concord October 9, 1788; married Abigail Wheeler on June 20, 1732. [1] [2]
  2. Timothy born at Concord August 17, 1712; married Rebecca Farrar on February 7, 1749 [1][2] : died at Lincoln on November 11, 1768. His widow Rebecca administered his estate. [6]
  3. Luke born at Concord on November 3, 1714. [1] [2]died before March, 1783. [5]
  4. Hannah born at Concord December 6, 1716 [1] [2]; married first Elnathan Jones by 1735; married second, Cord Cordis [5] of Boston on October 2, 1740. [7]
