Biography

Leora Arline Brown born 24 Oct 1903,[1] was the daughter of Charles Brown and Ora Sharp. She was the eldest of 2 children. She had one younger sister, Mildred May (Brown) Wilson. Her Mother died of Tubuculoses, on Thanksgiving Day, when she was just 11 yrs old, and her sister was age 1. Her father hired a housekeeper to take care of the home and girls. The second one was Mary Keller, who stayed on with the family until after her fathers death. Leora was 16 years old, living with her Father, Charles Brown in 1920, in Center, Clinton Indiana, on the Family Farm. Beside herself, her sister Mildred-6, and Mary Keller-27-the house keeper were in the home.[2] On completion of High School she went to Chicago where she attended Nursing School. She contracted Tuburculosis, and moved to Albuquque, Bernilillo County, New Mexico, to be treated in a T.B. Sanatarium. She was there in 1928.[3] She was a patient in the Methodist Sanatorium in Albuquerque, in 1930, at age 26.[4]
She then moved on to Douglas, Arizona where where she met Howard Holt. She married Howard William Holthoefer aka Holt on December 1, 1930, in Lordsburg, Hildago County, New Mexico.[5] He had shortened his name to Holt and they were married by that name. They had two children during their marriage.

They lived in several places in New Mexico during their marriage. In 1940 they were living on Pearce St. in University Heights, Albuqueruque, NM.[6]
When World War II started they moved to North Hollywood, where Howard worked for Lockheed Airplane Factory and was a mechanic on the side. She regestered to Vote in California at the time. [7] In 1945 they came back to Albuquerque where they Had a home at 200, Virginia St. NE. [8]
She and Howard Divorced in 1949. She worked as a Private nurse until she retired.[9]
She died on January 1, 1981, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the age of 77. She was cremated and her ashes were strewn in the Mountains she loved so well.[10]

Leora was just 11 when her mother died. Leora grew up on the farm. She went to school next door to her Grandmother Sharp's home in Frankfort. After graduation from high school she attended nursing school in Chicago, IL. She then contacted TB (Tuberculosis) and for her health moved to Albuquerque, NM. She stayed in the Presbyterian Hospital Sanatarium for Tubeculosis patients, on Central Avenue. Then she moved to Douglas AZ where she was a nurse. She met and Howard Holt there. They were married in Lordsburg NM. Howard was an auto mechanic. They moved on to NM where they lived in several towns. They had two children, Ora May (Dolly) and Charles H. (Buddy). They moved to California during World War II where Howard worked for Lockheed airplane factory and was a mechanic on the side. In 1945 they came back to Albuquerque where they built a house.

They divorced in 1949. She worked as a private nurse until she retired.
