Research Notes
Charles's Find a Grave memorial's information does not match the information that was provided for the 1989 Brady, Nebraska Centennial Book for the Brown Family. The dates of birth and death conflict. Unable to locate a V.A. Headstone Application at this time, headstone only provides rank, name and unit/regiment information. The Find A Grave memorial is unsourced so there is no way to tell for sure where the memorial's manager obtained the conflicting dates of birth and death. Until a government document is located listing the date of death (believed to be either 1914 or 1919, will continue to assume that the family provided information in the 1989 Brady, Nebraska Centennial Book is accurate.
1850 US Census seems to suggest that Charles was born c. 1843, Find a Grave memorial states 1848, but Charles has a younger brother, Albert listed as age 5 in 1850, this suggests that Charles date of birth is 1843 or a prior year, his age is difficult to make out on the original it looks like a 7. Charles's age is given as 20 on his Illinois Civil War enlistment records in 1861, suggesting year of birth is in fact 1841 as stated in the 1989 Brady Nebraska Centennial Book Biography for Charles and Celia Brown.
