Biography

According to his monument at Flagg Spring Cemetery in Newtown, Ohio, Thomas Brown was born on May 2, 1797 in Bucks Co., Pa. and died on March 29, 1867, likely in Newtown, Ohio.[1] The name of his wife, Sarah, also appears on the monument. Some people have indicated that Sarah's maiden name was Mercer; however, on Hannah Ann (Brown) Tucker's 1913 death certificate,[2] her father is identified as Thomas Brown and her mother as Sarah Weeb. We're fairly certain this was an error by the informant, a cousin of the deceased, or a transcription error, and should have been Webb. Three Webb families (John, Jacob and Clayton) lived very near Hubbard Brown in Anderson Township according to the 1820 census and all three had daughters the right age to be Sarah. We have found no marriage document for Thomas and Sarah (Webb) Brown to corroborate this one way or the other. We also have not found a document that indicates Thomas Brown's middle initial was S, as some have suggested.

Based on census and other records, Thomas and Sarah Brown likely had at least nine children, assuming all the children living with them were their biological children. Thomas Brown was a blacksmith, just like his father, Hubbard Brown. For a list of their children, see the Brown section of the Pruiett-Parker.com website.[3] There were two Thomas Browns in Newtown, Ohio in the early 1800s and they are often confused even though one was a physician and the other was a blacksmith. Thomas M. Brown was the son of Thomas Brown, shopkeeper, and Anne Mercer, the daughter of Captain Aaron Mercer, one of the original settlers of southwestern Ohio. This documented marriage may be the source of the confusion around the last name of the wife of Thomas Brown, blacksmith.
