Charles was born in 1884. He was the eldest son of James Brown and Margaret Miller. Charles was working as a telegraph operator when he enlisted to serve in World War I in 1916. He was assigned to the signal training depot as was his younger brother Wilfred Miller Brown, although the men were in different divisions and Charles was a Sergeant. On 8th Oct 1917 Charles was stationed in Houdain, France (near Belgium) and was sent on a military errand using a bicycle. The road was wet and a truck skidded and struck Sergeant Brown, knocking him down. A first the injury seemed to be slight but as time progressed it became apparent it was a serious fracture and Charles was evacuated from France. He spent 117 days in hospitals and suffered the partial loss of function of his left arm. He was later discharged from the Canadian military as medically unfit. In 1920 Charles married Catherine Brown and they lived in Toronto where he worked as an accountant. The couple do not appear to have had children. Charles passed away in 1954 and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Owen Sound.
