James was born in 1861. He was the son of James Brown and Mary Picken. [1]

He married Margaret Ralston in 1888. [2]

They had one daughter, Mary Helen 1890-1976

Margaret died in 1902.

In 1909 he married Mattie Wright. [3]

James passed away in 1956.

From FindAGrave: Rockford Register-Republic, Monday, February 13, 1956 JAMES BROWN SERVICES SET James A. Brown, 94, 1205 N. Court st., died at 3 p.m. Sunday in his home. Born Nov. 27, 1861, in Guilford Township, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Alexander Brown.

He lived 52 years in Rockford, 50 of them at the N. Court St. address.

He was married to the former Margaret Ralston who died in 1902. Later he married the former Mattie E. Wright. She died in 1929.

Mr. Brown, a retired farmer, was a member and for seven years treasurer of the First Presbyterian church. He also was a member of Star in the East Masonic lodge 166: Winnebago chapter 24; Royal Arch Masons; Crusader Commandery 17, Knights Templar; and Rockford chapter 53, Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary H. Brown, former head of the social science departments at Central and West high schools. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Mary Turner, Garden Prairie, and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Burpee-Wood funeral home, 420 N. Main st., with the Rev. J. Rodman Williams, pastor of First Presbyterian church officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Consanquinuity

Margaret and James are second cousins. Charles Brown is their great-grandfather.
