Military Service

During the Civil War, he trained as a Private in Company E of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 23 years old, single and working as a cook when he enlisted on 4 April 1863 from Bryan, Ohio. He deserted from Readville, Massachusetts where the regiment was training on 18 April 1863 before they departed for the South.[1]
