Biography

Benjamin Brown was born 1 SEP 1713 in Canterbury, Windham, Connecticut, to Thomas & Rachel.[1] He married 24 MAR 1735 Mary Shirtley /Shurtleff at Canterbury, Windham, Connecticut.[2] Benjamin died 7 NOV 1773 in New London, Connecticut.[3]

The Brown farms in Canterbury were located adjacent to those of Josiah Cleveland, as described in Benjamin's grandfather's Last Will & Testament[4] when defining the lands bequeathed to his son & executor, Deliverance. And as the Brown & Cleveland families were close neighbors, their children were no doubt close friends. It develops that Thomas's son Benjamin (of this profile) had an affair with Abigail, the daughter of their neighbor, Josiah Cleveland. That affair produced a child/son born in Canterbury, out-of wedlock in 1732. And the couple did not marry. Benjamin and his father both put up a surety bond with the Windham County Court for support of the child (see attachments). The boy was named in his mother's father's 1750 Will (Josiah), bequeathing him a horse, a saddle, a gun, clothing and a paying job on the Cleveland farms for as long as he wished[4].

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Benjamin by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Benjamin:
