Janet was born in 1838. She is the daughter of James Brown and Helen Fleming. In 1851, at age 13, Janet is living at Milnholm Head in Strathave, Lanarkshire, with her parents, and her siblings, Joseph age 11, Thomas age 7, Christina age 4, Agnes age 2, and Helen age 1 month.
