Biography

Mary A (---) Miell was born 15 Aug 1822.[1] She was a native of Ireland,[2][3][4] arriving in the United States before 1853.

She married James Miell (1829-1865) about 1853 in New York, New York and they later resided on Long Island.[2] According to James' probate documents, they had the following children:[5]

  • Richard, born 1854
  • Julia, born 1856
  • Eliza, born 1858
  • Amelia, born 1860
  • Unnamed [Phoebe], born 1863

They also had the following son, who died in infancy.

James was in Strawberry Hill, Jones County, Iowa in 1860 and was enumerated with another family on that year's US Census. By 1861, the family had removed from New York to Anamosa, Iowa, where James worked at his trade as a brickmaker.[2]

James died on 3 Nov 1865. At that time, Mary was said to be "insane". She and her children were removed to the poor house according to her husband's probate documents (see James' profile).

In 1870, Mary was a servant in the Holt household in Anamosa, Iowa, the household including: Edward C Holt 38, Mary A T Holt 28, Catharine T Holt 8, Josephine A Holt 6, Harry James Holt 4, Thomas Holt 77 and servant: Mary Miell 48.[3]

In 1880, she resided in Jackson, Jones, Iowa, in the household of her son, Richard, including: Richard 24, Ella 17 (his wife), William 6 months (their son), Mary 50, and daughters Phebe 20 and Eliza 22.[4]

In 1895, she resided with Richard and his three sons in Jones County: Richard H 40 (widowed), Mary 74 (widowed), William P 15, James W 3, and George H 10.[6]

Mary died 24 May 1896 and is buried in Amber Cemetery, Jones County, Iowa.[1][7]

  • A Mary Ann Brown, age 5, daughter of Richard and Ann Brown, with sisters Elizabeth and Sarah, is on a list of passengers that arrived in New York in 1832 aboard the "Freak". More research needed.
  • In 1833, the Brown family, including Michael 28, [Mary] Ann 28, Thomas 0, Julia 10, Martha 7, and Mary Ann 5, arrived in New York, New York, from Liverpool, England aboard the "Nimrod".[8]
