Maud Brown was born in 1878, in Tollingham Farm, over 800 acres and close to the Market Weighton Canal midway between the village of Holme on Spalding Moor to the west and Market Weighton to the northeast. [1]
In 1881 John Brown has a huge 838 acre farm, near Holme on Spalding Moor, with 33 workers. His wife, Sarah, is away visiting her parents, but six children down from Elizabeth age 11 to infant Maude age 3 all born in Holme parish, are at home on the farm. [2]
Schoolgirl 1891 Leeds
John and Sarah Brown have retired. Their eldest son present, illegible but clearly Herbert, is a butcher's apprentice. The next three children, Maud 12, John William 6 and an otherwise unknown Illa 5, are at school. Pattie, also known as Gertrude is a child at home.[3]
Marriage 1901 Leeds
Arthur Etches marries Maud Brown in All Hallows with St Simon, Leeds early in 1901. [4][5]
Newly Married 1901 Burley, Leeds
Arthur and Maud Etches, soon after their marriage, are in Burley, a northern suburb of Leeds. Arthur has something to do with Steam Engines but the last word is heavily crossed in pencil. [6]
Fitter 1911 Kirkstall, Leeds
Arthur and Maude Etches have moved to Kirkstall in west Leeds. Arthur is now clearly described as an engineer's fitter in a steel wagon works. Steel wagons in 1911 would be for the railways. Maude has borne three children, one dead as well as the two with them. [7]
Death 1931 Leeds
Maud Etches dies in Leeds early in 1931, perhaps the hardship of the Great Depression had weakened her. This was an early death even then. [8]
