Sylvester was one of the original homesteaders in Isabella County and received 80 acres from the State of Michigan June 9, 1871, for which he paid one dollar ($1.00). He sold that property to Jacob Gates on May 7, 1872 for $700.00. Sylvester and Nancy (Whitla) Heckathorn) had one child, Sylvester Brown Jr. Sylvester was also a "49er" and spent several years in California prospecting, for which he got his nickname "California Brown."
