Mr William Franklin Browne, whose interment took place in Karori Cemetery yesterday, was a native of Bardadoes, where his father, an officer of the 12th Battalion Loyal Infantry, was stationed. Mr Browne arrived in Wellington in 1862 in the brig Blanche (Captain Jacob Care), after a tempestuous voyage of 153 days. He joined the Native School Department in 1873 as teacher, and during his twenty years' connection with the department served in Poverty Bay, Bay of Plenty, Hokianga, and Wairarapa. He was sixty-seven years of age.[2]
