He was born July 30th 1867[1] to Robert Galbraith Brown and Susan Froneberger Brown and was their oldest son.
His middle name and nickname "Brethy" was the same as his father's middle name. Both were named after Robert's maternal grandfather Galbraith Caldwell.
He married Lillian Hopper on March 6th 1890[2] and together they had two children, Hershel and Mabel.[1] Lillian died around 1898 or 1899, possibly of typhoid, and Hershel and Mabel went to live with Brethy's parents.[3]
John remarried in 1900 to Jennie Tiddy and they went on to have at least 9 children.[4][5]
He died in 1940 of cancer of the larynx, at Long Creek, Mecklenburg County, NC.[6]
He is buried at Cherryville City Cemetery in Gaston County, NC.[7]
Research Notes
There are conflicting birth dates: both family bibles list his birth date as 30 July 1867, while his headstone says he was born 31 July 1867. His death certificate give his birthdate as 30 July 1866 instead. Because the entries in at least one of the bibles was most likely written at or very soon after his birth, that seems a more reliable source. The informant on his death certificate - a Mrs. Tom Anderson - was almost certainly not present at his birth. [[[Green-20|Green-20]] 14:09, 18 June 2017 (EDT)]
Who was Mrs. Tom Anderson? A married daughter? Does he appear in the 1940 census?

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Brethy by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Brethy:
