Biography

Sylvanus Browne was born on 25 Jun 1884 in Henderson County, Kentucky in the United States of America.^[1] He was the son of Edward Brown and Georgiana Brown. Early in his life, he worked as a blacksmith, a trade he learned from his maternal grandfather, Mike Browne, and an uncle.^[2][3]

Sylvanus served in the US Army in World War I. He was a first lieutenant and served in Troop B in the 9th Cavalry.^[4][3] He enlisted around 1909^[3][5] and was discharged on 23 Apr 1919.^[6]

Sylvanus married Lovie Usher in Bexar County, Texas on 25 June 1911. They were married by I.H. Kelley, Paster of Second Baptist Church.^[7] They had six children, including well-known actor Roscoe Lee Browne. The family eventually settled in Woodbury, Gloucester County, New Jersey and around 1923, Sylvanus began preaching at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Woodbury. He pastored several other Baptist churches in the area before his retirement in 1972.^[8][3]

Sylvanus's first wife Lovie died in 1961. He later married Roberda Parkinson Brown.^[3]

Sylvanus died on 31 Mar 1981 at Underwood Memorial Hospital in Woodbury, New Jersey^[6][9] and is buried in Beverly National Cemetery in Beverly, New Jersey.^[4]
