Biography

James Browne born in Oct 1786 at "Bigbarn" which is in Cornerstown townland, Mayglass parish, Co Wexford, son of John and Eleanor (Rochfort) Browne, "a prosperous tenant farmer family." [1]

James Browne served as RC Bishop of Kilmore from 1829 to 1865.

3rd cousin of Bishop James Browne RC Bishop of Ferns

He established the St. Augustine's Seminary (Kilmore Academy), a school and minor seminary for the Diocese of Kilmore, in 1839, and afterwards he acquired a large house and out offices in Farnham Street, Cavan from Captain Joseph Maguire.

James Browne died 11 Apr 1865 in County Cavan, age 79 yrs. [2]

The will of Right Rev James Browne RC Bishop, late of Cavan, County Cavan, who died 11 Apr 1865 was proved 19 June 1865 at the principal registry by the oath of Right Rev Nicholas Conaty, RC Bishop, of New Prospect, Virginia, County Cavan, and Rev John O'Reilly of Virginia, County Cavan, P.P. of Lurgan, the executors.
