Elizabeth Browne was probably born in England about 1621. She traveled to New England as a child or young adult, and lived in Hadley, Massachusetts. Possibly married a Mr. Hawke.
On 9 Jan 1620 Edward Ward made his will: He mentions his wife, Judith, sons, Thomas, Nathaniel and Leonard, daughters Lydia [Markham], Mary [Cutting], Rebecca [Allen] and Susan [Browne].
Susan Browne, widow of Robert Browne of Ipswich, made her will 22 Mar 1626, proved 24 Apr 1627. She mentions her mother Judith & two of her sisters, Rebecca Ward & Mary Cutting, "as well as Elizabeth Browne, dau of my brother-in-law William Browne and sister-in-law Mary Browne"[1] William is likely her husband's brother. Mary could either be Robert's sister or wife to one of Robert's brothers (maybe William).
On 27 Mar 1664 Nathaniel Ward will names "It[em] out of my estate at Hartford I give to my Kinswoman Elizabeth Hawkes of Hadley ten pounds". His executor is his nephew, William Markham, son of Lydia. [1]
The wills mentioned above lead many to the conclusion that she is the wife of John Hawke, Richard Hinsdale and Thomas Dibble.
RESEARCH NOTES
Note that all other relatives mentioned in Nathaniel's will are identified by their relation to him. Ex: "Noys son to my sister [Mary] Cuttings daughter, Brown of Salem". Elizabeth is the only one referred to as just Kinswoman (aka niece of his sister). I believe this is the same Elizabeth mentioned in the will of Susan Browne.
Hadley Cemetery has an Elizabeth Hawke, wife of John Hawke buried. Died Feb 28th (year not legible on gravestone) aged 66. Gravestone seems to be erected by her children based on the text on the stone. The current dates and biography on that memorial do not match the information on the headstone.[2] The date on the headstone does not match the date of death published for Elizabeth Dibble of of Sep. 1689. The record I saw of Elizabeth Dibble's burial was a typed document not an original.
Further investigation needed into this cemetery/death record to obtain year and to see if that can be cross referenced with other sources.
I have found two FamilySearch profiles for Elizabeth Browne, father William, born in Suffolk that would be about the right age. Neither has sources attached.
Elizabeth Browne 29 March 1618 in Woolpit, Suffolk, England MPQ2-M23
Elizabeth Browne 30 March 1619 in Holy Trinity Church, Bungay, Suffolk, England K8P6-RTS
DISPUTED INFORMATION
The Great Migration Study determined there is not enough evidence that she is the same Elizabeth that married John Hawkes/Hinsdale/Dibble. See Unknown-446105 for more information.
US International Marriage records has an Elizabeth Brown married John Hawkes 1642 attributed to Eliz. Hawkes/Hinsdale/Dibble.[3] Since these records are a compilation of data found in many publications, the original record is needed to see if it states Brown. Likely the Great Migration Study checked this.
The claim that Elizabeth's mother is Lydia Ward, sister of Susan (Ward) Brown is unsubstantiated. The claim that her father is William of Tavistock, Devon, England is also unsubstantiated. See Browne-7109 for more information.
