Biography

In 1850 we find Matilda under her maiden name living with her mother and some siblings. Keith says she did not marry until her mother died and that she married John Stanberry. No children.[1] Yet there's the following:

14 Nov 1829 - A Matilda Broyles marries Stephen C. French. Greene Co., Tennessee. Service by Henry Earnest, J.P.[2]

Stephen French is found in the 1830 census but not thereafter. If Matilda married him it's possible she was quickly widowed.

STEPHEN C. FRENCH was born after 1810. He married MATILDA BROYLES on 11 Nov 1829 in Greene County, Tenn. She was born before 1810. Notes for Stephen C. French: Stephen French is found in the 1830 census of Greene County. He and Matilda do not yet have any children. Stephen and Matilda may have had a daughter Matilda, since there is a Matilda French who married Samuel Broyles 20 Oct 1846. Or possibly Stephen's Matilda was widowed and she remarried (a cousin?). It is possible that there is no connection, but if so where did Matilda French come from?
