My family tree is here on WikiTree but it's private.
I've been doing "whole family" research on the Broyles and Briles families for many years. My particular interest is in gathering and confirming sources and identifying and working on the mysteries and puzzles. I've also done original work on the Lay families of North Carolina and East Tennessee, and I have documented the early generations of the Trammell family in the United States. Efforts in 2021 include documenting the immigrant George Brasfield/Brassfield of Caroline County, Virginia, and his sons. Work in 2024 has focused on the Waters family of Caswell County, North Carolina.
A remarkable update: The Broyles Family, The First Four Generations, 2022, by Cathi Clore Frost. Additions and corrections to Keith's work with a deep focus on finding all primary records. It identifies members of the first five generations with detail given on the first four. A truly excellent work for those seeking the facts!
Thomas Trammell of Fairfax County, Virginia - A major rewrite to the story of the man thought to have been born c. 1710 and who is said to have married Elizabeth Sebastian.
Would you have any reason to suspect a connection between a James R. Boyles who married Malinda Williams in Sumner Co., TN and your Broyles/Bryles family? Specifically, I'm curious about the family of Rebecca (Bryles) Holloway (1823-1883) who married John Holloway 1841 in Fayette Co, TN?
The census records have James R. Boyles coming out of Maryland which at a quick glance makes me think there's little hope of a convenient connection to Rebecca. However, the John Holloway she married seems very likely to connect to my Y-DNA line somehow and this James R. Boyles married into my allied Holloway/Williams family in Sumner Co. with significant contemporary connections in Limestone Co, AL, Fayette Co, TN and Prairie Co, AR which matches geography of John and Rebecca.
Joe, I think it's doubtful there's a connection. There's no Broyles connection to Maryland that has been discovered and your man is firmly Boyles from the records. Best of luck in your research, Steve.
Thank you for your edit to Celia Lovitt Caddell. I inherited her profile and haven't spent a lot of time on it yet to see if anything needed changing. I have a bad habit of chasing rabbit trails and forgetting where I am supposed to be and what I am supposed to be doing! :)
I rec. the email about the merge between William Lay (Lay-2957) and Billy Lay (Lay-537). This is the same man William L. Lay so, i have not gotten this far with Wikitree can you direct me on how to make the merge?
Thanks for asking, Robin. At the bottom of every profile is the option to propose a merge. I thought I had done so but apparently I did not so I will propose a merge. WikiTree insists on merging from the higher numbered profile to the lower, in this case Lay-2957 to Lay-537. We will both have to approve the merge. After the merge it is likely some cleanup of the updated 527 profile will be needed.

Hi Steve, my grandmother was Sophia Jane Broyles (Higgins-2984). She was the daughter of Kate Broyles (Broyles-542). From what I can determine, Sophie was raised by her Aunt Sarah after Kate died. Sarah later married a Jodie Shelton. Sarah died some time before I was born, so I never knew her, but my family visited Jodie (Uncle Jodie) several times in my childhood. Anyway, Sophie married my grandfather (Peeler-1240) and lived in Tryon, NC. My great uncle Odell Peeler built the first "toy horse" statue while working for the Tryon Toy Company. My siblings and I (and our families) are the only living descendants of Kate Broyles. I would like to learn more about Sophie and Kate. We were always told as children that there was some Native American connection, but I suspect that it was a melungeon ancestor (possibly this Acey Higgins who was the father of Sophie and her siblings. Any information will be greatly appreciated.
Hello. I am in the process of adding profiles for all the people buried in Copps Chapel Cemetery, Moniteau County, MO. I am trying to resolve Ida McClanahan, who married Isaac Williamson. I was wondering if you can confirm or deny that she is the daughter of Jackson McClanahan and Elizabeth Broyles. I found a transcribed McClanahan Family Bible which had the entry "Ida Ella, Daughter of Jackson and Elizabeth McClanahan, was born the 9th Day of May A. D. 1869" and and entry "Eda E. Williamson, Wife of Isaac Williamson, Departed this life December 13, 1902." There is an entry on FindAGrave that has her buried in Copps Chapel, but the cemetery records do not have an entry for her. I did find them in what is now Oklahoma in 1900, and Isaac was widowed by 1910, so the Bible entry could fit. Any light that you can shed on her would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Mae Newton Bruce (Newton-6439)
I am trying to resolve a mystery in my family tree that you may have some insight into. As in your family tree, I have a relative, Lewis Rector (Rector-1279), who lived in North Carolina and received a land grant in Campbell Co. Tennessee. Lewis was deemed insane and his son, Joel Rector (Rector-13) and Joel's son Andrew Rector moved to this land and raised families there. The mystery is that both Joel and Andrew appear to have second families in TN. Joel's wife Mary Stice stayed in NC and there is Mary who could be either his daughter or a second wife who lives with Joel in TN. There is a marriage certificate for Joel Rector and Polly Dial in Campbell Co. TN in 1845 but since there are no birth dates, it is hard to know if this is the same Joel Rector. I can't find any records for a Polly Dial but this last name appears in your lineage as well. Might you have any interest in assisting me in resolving this mystery?
Deonda Rector Scott (Rector-835)
As far as I can tell, "Aunt Susie" [Brassfield-207] is the only person my grandmother knew of by that name. She would have been called "Aunt Susie" because she was married to "Uncle" Thompson Kissinger, the brother of my grandmother's grandmother, Catherine Kissinger Kirk. So she was a great-aunt by marriage to my grandmother.
Hi Steve and thanks for the response to the article. I have added Brassfield-207 from the information I have. I am trying to figure out who her husband's parents were.
Do you have info on the circumstances of Dennis M. T. Brassfield's death in 1855? Thanks, Margaret Summitt [Robe-79]
Hi Steve I sent you an email but no reply so I am reposting here. I think you may be interested in an article I have written on the Brassfield and Kirk families. I was trying to track down the origin of a family legend about the murder of "Aunt Susie" Brassfield's uncle, whoever he was. Please send me a private message so I can pass the article along to you. Thanks. Margaret Summitt [Robe-79]
Thank you Steve for your great work on the Lay Family, particularly showing that Sarah Lay is the wife of William Loftis, and not William Foster (my relative). I attached the copy of the deed to Sarah's profile that shows the Loftis name. As much as I would like to be related to the Lay family I am glad someone else found this also!

Could be a red herring, but worth asking.
Thanks, Joe
