Matthias Broyles, son of Jacob Broyles and Mary Catherine (Fleishman) Broyles, was born in Orange County (soon to become Culpeper County) in the Colony of Virginia around the year 1746. His birth is estimated based on his placement in his father's will and the estimated births of his siblings but specific dates of 21 April 1746 and 3 November 1746 appear in some online genealogies without a source.
Like most all of his siblings, Matthias made the move from Culpeper County to western North Carolina (now Tennessee) around the year 1780. He and Eva were prosperous and left many land records in Culpeper and in Greene County, Tenn., where, along with brothers Michael and Jacob, he settled on Horse Creek. He was also among the first members of the family to move to Indiana. His life was cut short by a rare accident-- he was killed by lightning on a trip from Indiana back to Tennessee.
Keith[1] reconstructs Matthias's family as follows: Matthias was one of three Broyles living on Horse Creek in Greene Co., Tenn. The children of Jacob are named in his will. The sons of Michael are known. By a process of elimination "though not depending on that altogether" the family of Matthias is reconstructed.
Children:
Andrew Bryles has sometimes been named as a son but he is the son of Matthias's brother Michael. A daughter Rebecca (Broyles) Rymal has been suggested but this now appears unlikely.

20 Mar 1775 - Mathis Broyle, John Broyle and wife Margaret, Adam Broyle and wife Mary Catherine Broyle sell 70 acres to John Glassell of Culpeper Co. [5] This appears to be sale of more of their inheritance.

- About 1806, he traveled from Greene County, Tennessee, to Harrison County, Indiana, where he resided for several years with a daughter ( Grace Mauck). He left in 1816 or 1817 to return to Tennessee, but never arrived, having been killed by lightening as he was passing through Kentucky.

"Dear Cousin: Yours the 19th ult. was duly received. I remember your grandfather Matthias Broyles very well. I cannot at present state the year he came here, but I know that he came while Indiana was still a territory and that he left at or about the time of the adoption of the State Constitution in 1816. It was said that he left because he could not retain his slaves in this state. I remember seeing him when he first came, know of his living for a time in the Sugartree Grove from which he removed to the Snyder neighborhood.
