Biography

John was born before 1776.

John Bruce married Sarah Butler on 11 April 1789 at St Mary's Lambeth, by license. They were bachelor and spinster, were both "of the parish", both signed the register, and witnesses were David Bruce and Elizabeth Phillips.[1] John Bruce was a brickmaker according to the marriage license.[2]

Sarah was admitted into the British Lying-In Hospital, Holborn, on 6 August 1791, her son James was born the same day, baptised on 18 August, and they were discharged from the hospital on 23 August. Hospital records had the information that Sarah was 29, her husband John was a brickmaker, and they lived at Lambeth. [3]

Research Notes

According to his son James's death certificate, James was born in Scotland and his parents were John Bruce, a baker, and Sarah Butler. James himself said in his convict indent, that he was from Arbroath, which is in Angus

So far there has only been one possibility found for his birth: There was a James Bruce whose birth was recorded in London in 1791 to parents John Bruce and Sarah Butler. (see above). However this john Bruce was a Brickmaker, not a Baker.

Why did James say he was born in Scotland if he was actually born in London?

James BRUCE’s ancestry is unclear. Jennifer BRUCE, who has undertaken considerable research, traces his birth to London on 6th August 1791 to John BRUCE and Sarah (nee BUTLER). These names are consistent with his death certificate. However, his death certificate records his place of birth as “Scotland” and his Conditional Pardon states that his “Native Place” was Arbroarth (which is in Scotland). James died in 1874 and is buried at Kelso.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

"Why did James say he was born in Scotland if he was actually born in London?"

I think the simple answer to this was that James was, to put it mildly, not the best or most honest of people. I suspect he claimed his birth was in Scotland so as to make more plausible a claim that he was descended from Robert THE Bruce - certainly my family thought he was, so he presumably made that claim during his lifetime. It's been a real eye-opener to find out what the REAL story was, I can tell you! :)
