He succeeded his father in his estates and was served heir to him after his father passed away on 14 July 1625, 16 April 1629 and 17 November 1638. He was also served heir to his next youngest brother Alexander Bruce of Alva on 28 June 1638 (ref.1).
He had married Mary Preston, daughter of Sir Robert Preston of Valleyfield, however Burke's Peerage has his name as Sir John Preston 4th of Valleyfield and Grizel Colville, though no marriage record seems to exist to give a date or name of the spouse.
Douglas gives a daughter of of Sir John Preston of Valleyfield, Knt., as marrying George Bruce of Carnock.[3] Sir Edward Bruce, the 1st Earl of Kincardine is given as son and heir of George Bruce of Carnock by Mary, daughter of Sir John Preston of Valleyfield, Bt.[4]
