Hi Maike,
Sorry to hear about your operation. I do hope the recovery is going well and that you'll be back to normal soon. Thought I'd tell you what little I do know about Cornelius Webb Bruce:
Born 28 November 1867 at 28 Warmington Street Plaistow (which was then in Essex, now part of East London), parents Cornelius Bruce and Mary Ann Overhead. In 1881 he is living with his aunt (both his parents having died) in Halstead, north Essex. His aunt's name is Elizabeth. She has married James Dann Pulford, so Cornelius is living with them both. Cornelius is working aged 13 as a ba(n)ker's boy, {probably delivering bread} in the town of Halstead (which I know well). In 1891 Cornelius is living at 3 Bull Inn Chambers, Farringdon, which is in the actual City of London. as a packer. He is married by then to Alice Louisa Coe who he met in Halstead and married there 8 Feb 1891. By The time of 1891 census (5th April 1891) they have already had their first child, Harry William. In 1892 they have a second child Alice Louise. Alice had returned to her mother's home in Halstead for the birth and it is registered there. By 1897 they have moved to Camberwell in south London where Ada Elizabeth is born. Moved again by 1899 to Peckham, still in south London and Ida Beatrice is born there. By 1901, Cornelius Webb Bruce is working as a Groom and Hackney Carriage driver and is living at 23 Spa Mansions, Bermondsey. By 1911, he is working as a Motor cab driver (rare then as most cabs were still horse drawn) He and his wife are living at 58 Lancaster Road Walthamstow (then is Essex, now in East London). By then they have more children, Constance Maud (Bruce) Palmer (1896-1989)(who was born 1897 so should have been on the 1901 census, but was away for some unknown reason See Florence Ada (Coe) Twiss (bef.1876-abt.1955) for where she was.) Clara 1903, Winifred 1905, Charles 1907, Rose 1909, Donald born 1910. In 1939, Cornelius Webb Bruce is shown as a Widower, still working as a motor cab driver, now aged 71. He is living with his daughter Winifred and her husband. Their surname is Moore. Also living in the house are his daughter Clara and her husband James. Their surname is Disley.
I don't think this can possibly be correct, but the only Death record I have found for a Cornelius Webb Bruce is in 1972, which seems far fetched! May be you already know when your grandfather died and can put me right?
If you already knew all this and there is nothing new here for you, then my apologies.
Best wishes Maike for your good health Michael Waite
Biography comment by Michael Lock
I know a little about granddad Bruce's early life. As told to me, Michael Lock, by my father, his mother Alice and daughter of Cornelius Webb Bruce and himself. His main occupation was a cabby. He started with horse drawn cabs and ended with the classic, black, square box the London taxi. . He had a hobby which was racing greyhound dogs, although it probably included gambling. He drank alcohol moderately and took up smoking a pipe in his sixties. He lived with his many children after retirement. He was apparently never ill until he was 90 when he came down with the Mumps. He apparently moved to Colchester, Essex UK in his last years and was probably living with Constance Maud (Bruce) Palmer (1896-1989). He was 104 years 11 months and 1day old.
