Mary Bruce married Charles Penny on or after 28 Dec 1773 in Rathen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.^[2]

Mary / Margaret died between 1786 and 1789.

Research Notes

Birth My Heritage has over 50 matches for her. These span a date range of her birth of 1744 (1 entry) through 1759 (2 entries) 22 of them have a birth date of 1758 which is the most often reflected date. 13 of them gave a complete date of birth and location that I was able to find in Scotland's People Old Parish Registers. It is for Sept. 24, 1751 for 219/10 330 Lonmay page 330. Only her father John is listed and her name is listed as Mary. I think this is the one that is being selected because her marriage record also on Scotland's People says she came from Lonmay. There are a lot of other Mary or Margaret births in a plausible time period but this is one of two from Lonmay. The other is for 1746 also with John listed as the father so it is assumed she died and John is the same father.

There are 2 birth sources in Lonmay listed on Scotlands People for Mary Bruce, daughter of John Bruce., so it possible that there was a Mary, born in 1746, that died young. There was no Margaret found.

Marriage for Mary Bruce and Charles Penny (FR559) date: 28 Dec 1773 in Rathen (see above marriage link) People selecting one of these have selected the one with John listed as the father and her birth as Sept 24, 1751. Interestingly these entries on My Heritage that reference this date also show a mother named Margaret Bruce born Park. Not sure where they get her name. In Scotland's People there is a marriage for a Margaret Park and John Bruce 21 June 1750 parish 235/ reference 20 211 in Rathen which would work with the birth record for Mary who has a father named John. However it then would indicate that John Bruce the father of the Mary born in 1746 would not be the same one or at least likely had a different mother.

Children Most of the children birth sources have father listed as Chas or Charles Penny. Only a couple have Mary Bruce on them - twins William and Ann, born in 1775, Daughter Christian is listed as Pennie with mother as Margaret Bruce, born in 1784.

Death She is first wife of Charles. He married his second wife, Barbara Morrice (Morice) on Dec 24, 1789 so we know she was dead before that and after her last child was born in 1786.

There are some death sources for Mary / Margaret Bruce in Aberdeen, but not with last name of Penny / Pennie. Two of them are aged 81 / 82, so they are not valid.

• Margaret Bruce died or was buried on 29 Oct 1788 in Aberdour, Scotland. No age given. Her parent / other detail lists John Bruce, ^[4] which would match this profile, but not the entered death date.
