Biography

Alexander Bruce was part of the history of the British Honourable East India Company

Alexander was born in 1828 in India, the eldest son of Alexander Fairlie Bruce and Harriet Cathcart. He was baptized on 11 February 1829 in Nellore, Madras.[1]

He was educated at the Edinburgh Academy (1838-41).[2]

In 1845, Alexander joined the Honourable East India Company as an ensign with the 14th Madras Native Infantry, and was promoted to lieutenant in 1851.

In 1853 in Madras, he married Marianne Thomas, daughter of John Fryer and Diana Elizabeth Thomas.[3] They had five children:[4]

In 1857, he was promoted to captain in the Madras Staff Corps and served with the Mysore Commission for 20 years. He was promoted to major in 1865, lieutenant-colonerl in 1871, and colonel in 1876. He retired in 1877 with the rank of honorary major-general.

At the time pf the 1891 Census, Alexander, aged 62, was living in St Marylebone with his wife, Marianne, aged 67 (57?) and son, Michael, aged 24, togerther with two servants, Elizabeth Borned and Eliza Book.[5]

Alexander died in 1906 in Saint Marylebone, London, aged 77. He is buried in Highgate Cemetery East, in the London Borough of Camden.[6]
