May 17, 1853, he (William Negley) married Joanna, daughter of the late Rev. Robert Bruce, D. D.
Reverend Doctor Robert Bruce was an American minister and educator. Rev. Dr. Bruce is considered the first chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh. Rev. Dr. Bruce was a leading abolitionist. [4]
Robert Bruce was born on February 20, 1778, in Old Scone, Perthshire, Scotland. [1] He was the son of George Bruce and Helen (Norwell) Bruce. [2] He was christened on April 11, 1790, at Kelso, Roxburghshire, Scotland. [6]
From 1808 to 1846, Reverend Doctor Robert Bruce was pastor of the First Associate (United) Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. [3] ]4\
From 1819 to 1835, Rev. Dr. Bruce served as the principal (now known as chancellor) of Western University of Pennsylvania (now known as University of Pittsburgh). He also served as chancellor from 1836 to 1843. [3] [4]
In 1829, Rev. Dr. Bruce decided to admit black students to the university. He was known as one of the leading abolitionists in the Pittsburgh area. [4]
From 1820 to 1843, Rev. Dr. Bruce taught natural history, chemistry and mathematics at Western University of Pennsylvania. [3] [4]
Reverend Doctor Robert Bruce passed away on June 14, 1846, in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He was buried at Allegheny Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.[1]
